Ingredients
Main ingredients:
- 8 medium honeycrisp/gala apples
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup maple syrup, amber
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, Ceylon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
Optional add-ins:
- 1 whole cinnamon stick, remove after cooking
- 1 tablespoon butter or vegan butter, stir in at the end for extra richness
Instructions
Prep:
1
Wash apples thoroughly since the skins will stay on.
2
Core apples and cut into medium-sized chunks. Larger chunks will yield a chunkier final applesauce.
Mix:
1
Add apples to the crockpot along with lemon juice, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and maple syrup.
Cook:
1
Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until apples are soft.
2
Mash with a potato masher for chunky applesauce, or use an immersion blender for a smoother texture.
3
Taste and adjust sweetness or cinnamon as desired.
4
Let cool before storing. Refrigerate for 5 to 7 days or freeze in portions.
